One strategy for increasing equity, without increasing workload, is to provide students with open-ended opportunities to demonstrate knowledge.
I love having students complete ABC charts as it is accessible to all students – a major tenet of equity in education. Start by having students list letters A through Z within the paper margins. As you engage with the topic, students will write down words or phrases that begin with one of the letters and relates to the topic. For example, if you’re teaching argumentation, a student can write DEBATE for the letter D and the phrase QUEST FOR PROOF for the letter Q.
ABC Charts will be their word wall, so use it often.
Accommodation& Modification Ideas:
Reduce the letter requirement by asking students to complete x number of letters.
Remove letters completely from the page to provide modifications for students.
Fill in a couple for students and then ask them to fill in the rest.
Allow students to work in collaborative pairs or groups to share letters.
